On sabbatical 2016-2017
Chung (Fanky) Chak’s interest in the visual arts has always been focused on the genres of graphic design and photography. In graphic design, Chak’s primary research interests include font design, typography, iconography, the historical development of the design profession, and photographic communication. His design work has been featured in the Prints magazine, University and College Design Association, the Art Director Club of New Jersey, the Impact Awards and more. In addition to graphic design, he has since 2003 been working with photomontage. No matter the discipline, he strives to create communicative work that is open to interpretation. He considers his imagery to be visual poetry with a sense of timelessness and psychological impact, actively engaging the mind of the viewer.
His photographs have been exhibited in solo and group shows throughout the U.S. including Lock Haven University, Sumei Art Center (Newark), Eyedrum (Atlanta); the College Gallery of Hanover College (Indiana); Artspace (Raleigh); Viewpoint Gallery of Photography (Sacramento); Abrons Arts Center of Henry Street Settlement (New York); Purdue University (Indiana); the Society of Contemporary Photography (Kansas City), Pacific Northwest Center for Photography (Seattle); Phoenix gallery (NYC) and Plates to Pixel, an online gallery. Internationally, Chak’s work has been exhibited in UK, Hong Kong, and Sweden.
Chak received a Publication Award of US$10000 through the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and was an artist-in-residence at the Kala Art Institute, Berkeley, CA.
