The TCNJ Art Gallery invites you to an artist’s talk featuring Professor Emeritus Kenneth Kaplowitz in conversation with Anita Allyn, Coordinator of Fine Art and Photography & Video at The College of New Jersey. This event takes place in conjunction with My Camera is Always With Me: Professor Emeritus Kenneth Kaplowitz 50 Year Retrospective Exhibition, a celebration of the career of Kenneth Kaplowitz, retiring faculty member in the Art and Art History Department at TCNJ. TCNJ Art Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of My Camera is Always With Me: Professor Emeritus Kenneth Kaplowitz 50 Year Retrospective Exhibition, a celebration of the career of Kenneth Kaplowitz, retiring faculty member in the Art and Art History Department at The College of New Jersey. The exhibition will feature more than 100 photographs and photo collages from the early 1980s through the present. The exhibition will trace Kaplowitz’s embrace of evolving photographic techniques and technologies, and demonstrate his boundless curiosity and creative technical twists on photographic subjects. The exhibition will highlight several significant series of work from Kaplowitz’s career, including the Botanical Studies, Biblical Prints, Planets, and Artificial Intelligence series.

Biography
Kenneth Kaplowitz was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1941 and attended Arts High School, the first high school in the nation devoted to music and art. Kaplowitz received his Bachelor Degree in Art Education from Montclair State College in 1963, his Master Degree in Communications, TV and Film from New York University in 1968 and his Master of Fine Arts Degree in Sculpture and Studio Art from Rutgers University in 1970. His doctoral program in Creative Arts Education took place at Rutgers and Princeton Universities. He learned to use a camera as a young boy, taking pictures at Bryant Park and the Central Park Zoo and has been making photographs ever since. Over his career, Kaplowitz experimented with evolving photographic technologies, from early Kodak cameras, to modern, digital point-and-shoot cameras, from the black-and-white dark room to Photoshop. Kaplowitz has taught communications, film-making, TV production, life-drawing, painting, photo history, performance art and photography. He holds the title of Emeritus Professor from The College of New Jersey where he taught for forty-nine years from 1970 to 2020. Kaplowitz’s photography has been widely exhibited and collected. Exhibitions include solo
shows at Gallery Fourteen (Hopewell, NJ) and group exhibitions at The College of New Jersey, The Cambridge Art Association University Place Gallery (Cambridge, MA), 1650 Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), Lakeside Gallery at the Robert Wood Johnson Hospital (Hamilton, NJ), George Segal Gallery, Montclair State University (Montclair, NJ), The Trenton City Museum (Ellarslie, NJ), and Elmhurst Art Museum, Elmhurst College (Elmhurst, IL). His work is included in the collections of The College of New Jersey, the Hunterdon Art Museum, Tarleton State University, Morgan Stanley, The Bank of Princeton, Monmouth Museum, and the Erie Art Museum, Erie, PA.

Hours: TCNJ’s Art Gallery is located in the AIMM Building on the campus at 2000 Pennington Road in Ewing, NJ. Gallery hours are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 12:00 until 7:00, and Sundays from 1:00 until 3:00. All Art Gallery exhibitions are free and open to the public.
