poster_var35

A three-course sequence that can be taken concurrently or independently:

AAH 270-01 Topics: LANDSCAPES IN ART HISTORY / 1 unit (4 credits)
MoTuWeTh 1:30PM – 4:30PM, July 20August 7, 2015

Landscape into Art: The title of this course is borrowed from the classic book of that name by Sir Kenneth Clark, first published in 1949. Clark briefly discusses ancient and medieval renderings of landscape, but most of his book is devoted to observations regarding European painting of the 15th through the 19th centuries. This course will explore early landscapes (from ancient Greece and Italy) in greater detail and will emphasize interpretation of landscape painting in the contexts of contemporary religious, political, and scientific concerns. We will also broaden the discussion to include the constructed landscapes of gardens, land art in the 20th and 21st centuries, and earth-body art.
