AAE 200/ Sophomore Review for Art Education
The Art Education Sophomore Review is a qualifying assessment to help monitor student learning and progress. The review ensures students meet the teacher education requirements of the state of New Jersey and TCNJ’s Department of Art and Art History. The review will determine students’ strength and abilities and areas of needed improvement. The Sophomore Review is required for all art education students enrolled in AAE 250 (i.e., Spring of the Sophomore year).

AAE 220 / Foundations in Art Education
This course is designed to introduce future art teachers to the importance of the visual arts in education through theory, practice, and field experiences. Students will explore contemporary issues in art education and examine the characteristics and dispositions of quality art instruction in K-12 schools.

AAE 250 / Curriculum in Art Education
This second course in the art education sequence is designed to investigate curriculum in art education. The course introduces knowledge and skills to plan, organize, and facilitate meaningful and relevant art curricula for K-12 students encompassing a range of needs and abilities. Students will examine contemporary curriculum developments in the field of art education as they relate to society, education and art.

AAE 330 / Pedagogy in Art Education
This third course in the professional art education sequence will introduce and discuss the methods, theories and practical application of teaching art. It is designed to provide students with pedagogical approaches, experiences and knowledge that will guide their future success as effective art educators.

AAE 360 / Clinical Practice I: Art Education
This advanced pedagogy course is designed to provide students with teaching experiences and knowledge that will guide their future success as K-12 art educators. It allows students to explore art in the school curriculum, design and implement art lessons, teach K-12 art students, cooperate with NJ art teachers, and gain knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary to become quality art educators. The course consists of biweekly class meetings and field experiences at the elementary and secondary school level.

This course explores advanced topics in art education and art therapy. May be repeated as topic changes.

AAE 391/ Independent Study
For advanced work only. This individually-focused, self-guided course requires work under supervision of faculty advisor. It is an opportunity to develop personal interests within the major field. May be repeated.
Prerequisite: Enrollment as an upper-division art education major; student must have taken a minimum of three courses in the major area. Preregistration with signed approval of an art education faculty sponsor and department chair. This course may not be taken as a substitute for any other required course in the major.

AAE 490/ Clinical Practice II: Art Education Student Teaching
This is the fifth course in the professional art education sequence, and must be taken concurrently with AAE 492. This course is a semester-long student teaching experience reserved for art education seniors. Students will spend half the semester teaching full-time at the elementary level and the other half at the secondary level. This teaching opportunity focuses on observation, participation and responsible teaching under direct supervision of college supervisors and K-12 cooperating teachers. Field experiences will be arranged by the STEP Office.
Prerequisites: AAE 375. A minimum of C+ is required in all major courses. A GPA of 2.75 is required for student teaching. Reserved for Art Education majors

AAE 491/ Global Clinical Practice II: Art Education Student Teaching
This course provides students with an opportunity to spend seven weeks of their student teaching requirement at an international school, and the remaining weeks in a New Jersey school. Arrangements are made through the Office of Support for Teacher Education (STEP) and Global Student Teaching.
Prerequisite: AAE 375 with a minimum grade of a B; Reserved for Art Education majors. This course may be substituted for AAE 490.

AAE 492/ Clinical Practice II Seminar: Art Education Capstone
This is the sixth, and final course in the professional art education sequence, and must be taken concurrently with AAE 490. The weekly Student Teaching Seminar is intended to help pre-service teachers reflect upon their field experiences, and share questions and concerns that arise in the field. The course will enhance an awareness of the curricular and pedagogical issues that impact art teachers and art education in the contemporary K-12 school. The course serves to link the student teaching experience with the theoretical frameworks studied in previous art education classes, as well as studio and art history classes. The culminating project of the course is a comprehensive teaching portfolio.
Prerequisites: AAE 375. A minimum of C+ is required in all major courses. A GPA of 2.75 is required for student teaching. Reserved for Art Education majors
