This summer, three students are working with Professor Elizabeth Mackie on four projects involving book arts and papermaking. Two student collaborators, Amanda Intili and Jessica Hargwood, are rising seniors participating in Mentored Undergraduate Summer Experience. Matt Sivo, a rising junior, is working as an intern for the summer. The team will be making handmade paper throughout the summer for four book projects.
The main project titled Ortler Kettles is a large book installation discussing the ongoing destruction of the Ortler Mountain Range in Italy by kettle formation due to global warming. With the same topic of global warming in mind, two other books of accordion and alternative book structure are being created using handmade paper. Another accordion book involves the experimentation of handmade paper and the lazer cutter to create layers of cut out rice.
